Photo: Hut bagging in the Kawekas
The Kaweka Range rises inland from Hawke's Bay, and most of it is in Kaweka Forest Park. It is crossed by rivers such as the Mohaka and the Ngaruroro, and has a scattering of huts.
The club's trips here are mostly easy to medium hut tramps. Several visit the natural hot springs at Mangatutu and Mangatainoka, and Te Puia Lodge, Makino and Ballard huts come up often. June is the busiest month in the reports, which suits a hot-springs weekend in winter.
