Te Urewera is the homeland of Tūhoe and is looked after under its own act of Parliament. It surrounds Lake Waikaremoana, whose Great Walk is one of the best known in the country. Nearby, the Whirinaki forest and the more remote East Cape ranges are quieter.

The club's reports include the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk, huts in the Whirinaki such as Central Whirinaki and Upper Whirinaki, and trips towards Mt Hikurangi and the Raukūmara. April is the busiest month, which fits Easter trips.
