The Wairarapa is the farming country east of the Remutaka and Tararua ranges, with its small towns and a long, windy coast around Palliser Bay and Cape Palliser. The club's best-known walk here is to the Putangirua Pinnacles, a maze of eroded gravel columns, which it has been visiting since the 1940s. Castlepoint, further up the coast, also features.
Other reports include the walk through Patuna Chasm, a family visit to Pūkaha / Mount Bruce, a trip to Stonehenge Aotearoa near Carterton, and the Remutaka Incline, the old railway route over the hills. A handful are bike rides and cycle tours from Masterton, Riversdale and the south Wairarapa rather than tramps. The Aorangi (Haurangi) ranges, with huts such as Mangatoetoe, Kawakawa and Washpool, have their own page.
Most trips here are easy to easy-medium.
