Did you hear about the recent 'fitness' trip which took an inordinately long time to travel between Mangaterere Valley road end and Totara Flats, going in and coming out? Despite the doubtful advantage of being honoured with the presence of two experienced(?) executive members of the general committee (further identification will not be given), the trip managed to traverse a considerably greater length of the Waiohine Ridge and associated spurs than intended.
One of the aforementioned members, together with another on the trip, made a desperate and successful after-dark attempt to get out and avoid the further embarrassment of a Sunday night bivvy in one of the Tararua foothills' grottier creeks.
The filling in of various red lines on maps will, it is understood, involve a certain amount of guesswork.
To add to their chagrin the trip was followed in to Totara Flats by a medium party which followed a well marked track along the whole route. (It is suspected that the male leader of this six member medium party did not recruit actively for his trip as he felt that the presence of five female trampers made for some unique opportunities during a weekend in the hills.)
