Wet weather also dogged Ian and Karen Bunckenburg, Warren Thorburn, Tom and Fendall Haliburton, Lesley Marshall, Bruce McKinlay and Ian McLean on their trip up the Karangarua River between December 22 and January 9S. Warren says the sun-seekers suffered overcast weather nearly every day as they staggered up the Karangarua (which drains part of the Hooker Range south of Mount Cook), over Conical Hill and into the Douglas River before crossing the Douglas Pass into the Landsborough River, Zora Creek, Mueller Pass and out down the Mahitahi River, Highlights of the trip were the spectacular cage crossing over the Karangarua at Regine Creek, a very wet crossing of the outflow from the Douglas Glacier, and moving camp at 8 p.m. after settling into warm pits when a flooded side creek suddenly dropped. Impressions included the soaring slabs of the Douglas Gorge, the continual ayalanching of the Douglas Neve, the Douglas Rock Bivvy, the beauty of the Zora, and the regeneration due to noxious animal Kills,
