On February 10 Malcolm Fisher, Tony Gazley and Paul Richardson, after going to a lot of expense and inconvenience to overcome the Ferry strike, set off up the Whataroa Valley. With a cold front and a deep Gepression stationary over the area for the next 10 days, the group was unable to do very much. It had a look up the South Butler, saw nothing but rain, then went up the North branch and over Maud Pass to the Godley (the same route used by Paul Aubrey and Jack MecConchie in November). They. spent three nights and two days beside the Godley Lake trying to keep the tent down (or was it up?) and getting wet through for their trouble. With time and fuel running out, the three made an epic crossing of Sealy Pass in a ferocious nor'west storm to Scone Hut and cut to the road-end the following day.
