Eleven members left town at 5 p.m. reports Lindsay Cuthbertson, for an uneventful drive to Otaki Forks. The walk into Waitewaewae hut in pleasant conditions took four hours ... the party arriving at about 11 p.m. _"We were away by 7.30 a.m. on Saturday and had only travellea the short cold section of the Otaki River to the start of the climb when the rain began and continued more or less for the whole day. We found the going on the ridge considerably easier than expected and rapid progress was made to our coolish lunch spot. Notoriwa was crossed soon after lunch and a goat was hand captured and déspatched. The Murray Creek.track from the-Otaki came in on our right and sdéen after we arrived at Oriwa bivouac (8% hours). An excellent campsite was found in the bush nearby. Sunday dawned fine, clear and cold, with the snow covered ranges a splendid sight from the bivy area. About 8.30 a.m. we were off down the spur to the Makaretu Stream. Lunch was enjoyed in brilliant sunshine on the big flats before the short gorge. We reached the Pipe Bridge about 3.30 p.m." Brian Hunt had organised an excellent trip, which for all members of the party was a red line. t
