Here great volumes of water crashed down a gorge to a reccessed ey pool. The true left was almost vertical and the combination of rocky bluffs and steep vegetated guts appeared unscalable. We sidled on the right but were unable to drop back into the creek without I a lengthy abseil. We carried on round ( now above the Ruamahanga) over a vertical cliff till we got to within 25 feet of the river, Here we abseilled to the creek, We have only just begun when we were confronted by a 15 foot drop into yet another cold pool. We calied ‘it quits and headed straight up for Cattle Ridge. We stopred at 8.40pm at a smdll flat in : leatherwood and drapped our flies over the bushes in a feeble attempt to keep the rain off.‘ With no water and no comfort, we managed to fry one chicken for tea for six..
It rained most of the night and there’ was plenty of water on the fly for breakfast. It took only 30 minutes to reach the ridge- I top andwe stopped at the hut before continuing to Roaring Stag where we arrived at 10am. By midday we had reached Unamed Creek.
