Easter Flair 5A E(asy) Pip. to. St hive ect Billed as an FE trip, four less~than~keen trampers set’out onto the St Arnaud Range on Friday morning. The day was spent climbing to the tops up a good, graded track and then along to Six Mile Creek Basin - a fantastic place: for a,ski field. The. weather at this. stage was verging on the inclement - wintér on the way. Just as rain swept the tops_we spied’a nice, new hut in the Basin into which we piled and spent a relaxed night munching on Warren's grilled hot cross buns and drinking Milo. However, a start was made next day in glorious but cold conditions... The wind whipped us severely as we crosseG the ridge into the Arnst Basin. A feature of the St Arnaud Range is the large number of tarns en route ~ which were at this stage white capped in the gale. The route around the tops was curtailed as rain broke SO ponies _ down to the Arnst River. Travel down. the Arnst was "pleasant and easy with good sidling and wading down to the exit gorge which wes sidled high on the true left. . We camped.in Hopeless Creek on that cold wet evening. The next dey was a Nelson Lakes cracker, ©The four trip leaders decided to ‘traverse the Sunset Saddle. route te Angelus where all the other club parties were eventually located. A (potentially) horrendous night was spent under fly and tent, anchored by over 400 kg of rock, in:high gusts of wind and sporadic rain. The last glorious day (Monday } was spent. scurrying aoen Hee Stream and around the Lake in pouring rain. An interesting and varied trip. Tramps tramping were: Greg Aimer,-Claire Douglas, Paul Cooper, Warren Thorburn. +f na = 4
