Labour Weekend 23-26 October 1981
Labour Weekend and a Weather Map foul We stood at the Station and I quictiy growled What was I doing leaving the warmth at my home -To tramp the hills, perhaps feel chills in my bones. Two Kombis rattled north, with drivers Mike and Jack We breathed in exhaust fumes and sat among packs A turn off Jack made, wasn't quite right So Mike's van was first in, at our camp — for the night. Saturday morning 17 Mediums set off The weather was bright - we climbed to the tops Then a cold southerly change made the going rough Annette helped those ‘behind who. found things tough. Sunday morning found us almost in flight Down river. we went trying to keep up with Mike With quite a few sidles and time running out A few made an extra sidle which caused Mike to shout.
It was a difficult sidle and of a°great-héight ‘- Looking below we got quite a fright - A gomewhat annoyed Mike beckoned us down And warned us all there was no time to clown. Our meal .-that. night was nearly @ disaster When Sue's soft noodles got mixed with the harder But our good cook, Sean, soon had it in hand And the meal turned out realiy grand. ' Monday we struggled through leatherwood, back to the tops “Were blasted by .icy winds round 40 knots Then down to Rangi Hut for a late lunch and brew Outside a couple Sat, drinking wine and that! s true (in proper’ wine glasses toos}. : . I feel. so lucky to have shared the sights fo ‘Mountains ~ forests — birds in flight : With, companions who help to make tramping such ‘fun A great trip we had, despite lack of sun. : a Thanks to our leader Annette Johnson, “hér. ‘deputy Mike Hollis, also drivers Jack McConchie and Mike. “*-
