The forecast for the weekend was not promising ~- noythwest with rain changing on Saturday to southerlies with showers. So Friday night saw us heading for the shelter of Herepai Hut. (The hut, built as a combined project between the NZFS and the Bush Tramping Club, is yust on the edge of the bush on Herepai Ridge - at medium pace B *shours from theyoad end). We arrived at the hut just as the rain started. Come morning, the sound of the rain, driving against the windows, kept us in our pits until after breakfast. We spent the time debating where we should go, or if we should go at all. The risk of boredom setting in caused us to pack up and set off for Roaring Stag. By then the rain stopped and the wind was dropping, and by the time we got to Roaring Stag the sun was shining. So.off up to Cattlé Ridge Hut for lunch, The wind turneé to the south, and with it came “the cloud and mist. But the mist looked thin, and indeed the sun was: shining tarough occasionally, so onward we went. Once on the top of the ridge, it was obvious that we had made the right: choice. The mist was only on the east side of the ridge and to the west it was fine ~ not a cloud to mar the view of the north end of the : FAanges «: We heade@’ oft ‘down. the ridge to Cow: Creek. on the way down, it was revealed to me that.I was one of the: chosen. . Cur shadows were cast onto the mist in the valley below, and my shadows head was surrounded by a multicoloured halo. .(The others in the party. claimed.to. also. have a halo. about their shadows. but . IT must. zen that I did. not see any halo other than mine. ) : Next! morning; “we went out over Cow. ‘Saddle. and Cleft Creek to.arrive at the} Ruamahanga just. as the easy party were going past. From that time when. we had left. ‘them. at! the. road end on Friday until we met them again...on Sunday we saw no-one. ‘who says the Tararuas are becoming too ‘crowded? I . - : Trip members were Leo Homes, Peter Jackson, and Rod Tindale.
