HAUKURA-CATTLE RIDGE = Fit Trip (Februazy 4-6) ~ Gregory ora Being dropped off from the bus several miles from the road end sent the fit trip scuttling along after the F.E.'s. After a quick stop at the road end to gst out torches, we were on ovr way again sidling beside the river. Half an hour later we stopped, except for one eager member of the trip, to pitch the fly for the night. : Next morning we set off amidst showers that soon turned to rain and arrived at 'Herepai Hut' to find our ‘eager friend' who kindly had a brew on. We decided that the misty, wet tops were no place for us,. so we dropped into ‘Ruapae Stream’. and proceeded down towards ‘Roaring Stag’ {alias 'Squeaking Rat') Hut. Stopping there for a brew and lunch was more pleasant now that finer weather had arrived. Above the scrub line during the ascent of ‘Cattle Ridge' we were able to view the 'Fasy Trip' in Ruapas Stream i50C ft. below us. Stopping at ‘Cattle Ridge Hut' only to drop our packs we proceeded to the ‘ridge line' to be met by breath taking views of Dund=s and Hankure Ridges as well as Blue Range and the Wairarapa. After an early dinner everyone was in the pit by 6.3Cpm,. We woke at six the next morning and after some doubts about the weather: I we were cn our way along Cattle Ridges. After a rest stop at a cairn (marking the end of the ridge) we mace our way down into 'Cow Saddle' and down to lunch at the forks of ‘Cleft Creek' and the Ruamahanga. Taking the sidle track we met the Easy Trip soon after lunch and after a short stop proceeded to the road end. A great time was had by.all I especially as the trip turned cut to be 100% red line for all five . members. of the trip. 7 Those-.on the trip were: Gregory Ord. Greene Hawthorne. Peter Hodge, Peter Te Rini and. Gary Wood...
