TRAVERS - SASINE - Mt. CEDRIC (1-4 April) “Fit Trip - Grég’Ord -. Scrambling around the luggage lorries in Picton amongst crowds of people, we finally rescued all of our packs and -got.on the bus. Southwards we passed some bush fires and finally at St. Arnaud, most of us were woken. and told that it was time to get off the bus! Up went the tents and we spent the night at the lake front of Kerr Béy. ee By next morning it had been decided that the trip would be done in _ reverse, so after a short stop at Lake Head hut we pressed on amongst intermittent showers across the Travers River and up Hukere Stream. We stopped for lunch with everyone cowering from the rain under an overhanging rock. Huddled together dodging the drops and sipping a hot brew we © were grateful to whoever left a supply of dry firewood there last. Climbing up after lunch we finally came out above the cloud and were afforded our first views. Up some more and we arrived at Lake Angelus, where to everyone's disbelief Peter went for a swim! The trip leader then showed his first signs of weakness by allowing us to stay 1n the a eee e2

Next morning most of us were wearing long johns and overtrou' as we traversed along to Mt. Cedric where we got a great view of Lake Rotoroa and the Sabine Valley. Down at the lake the weather was better and some. of us enjoyed a swim while the others muttered something about there being a large number of sandflies (Meg couldn't work out why they always seemed to be hanging around her). That afternoon we travelled up the ~— Sabine until we met the F.E.'s at Sabine Forks, where we camped for the night. Next morning we journeyed up the East Sabine then up again into Travers Saddle. A two hour lunch was taken in gloriously sunny conditions by a tarn just on the other side of the saddle. Surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery everyone lay there lazily soaking up the warmth until it was.time to go. Then down to Upppr Travers hut where another sunbathe ing stop was taken and down to the campsite for the night, just past Cupola Creek. The next day we just. wandered down the Travers to the lake where we had lunch in a secluded little bay. There was a great variety of food as I everyone passed around what they had left after four days, except Eric who had cunningly left all his lunches et home. Finishing the trip we strolled out to .lake head and-met the other trips. Thanks Neil for a really great trip. — i . o - st On this sunny vacation were: 2) Neil Woodrow (leader), Megan Rodden, Greg Crd, Janine Tooley, Glynis “Woodrow, Barbara Thompson, Peter Thorn, Eric Evans, Simon Kerslake. .
