The first major decision of the weekend was to. decide which side of the I lake. to walk around, In the end it was up the middle by boat..: Leaving from Cold ater Creek hut, we made good time in the rain soaked valley. After-lunch and.a brew at Hopeless Creek, we rambled off to John Tait hut. -Arriving,at 3.30pm, the hut was found to be full and the Tararuas' wheel chairs were parked outside, We put.up the fly but only stubborn Neil slept in it, the rest of us camped on the hut floor. _ awoken by peak~bashing Tararuas at 5.30 we decided to go up to Cupola Basin hut for a day trip. It was misty on the tops so there wasn't much. of a view:: We stopped off at Travers Falls for a look-see and went back. to the hut. for the night. - : The morning saw us plodding back. again. . We couldn't: decide whether to -° go up to Hopeless Creek hut or not but didn't in the end, instead arrive ing at Lake Head hut for a late lunch.
