An honest pace had us crossing the Waingawa eat Mitre Flats °,00am Saturday morning where our intender trip South Mitre Stream - Dorset midge was duly noted. Progress at first was easy, a couple of short. bursts through the bush and we pushed on up Sth, Mitre making good time. However waterfalls became bigger and far more frequent, progress was slowed and finally the decision was made to climb out onto Mitre. The clag momentarily lifted giving us our first glimpse of the tops, the only problem was we were staring across at Baldy not North King. One of our little bursts through the bush had seen us miss the fork and plough on blindly up Baldy Creek. we later lunche@ at Mi@ King Biv and decided the best course was Jumbo. An hour to the top and the clag lifted as if on cue affording us an enjoyable trip along the tops. “e climbed the six steps to the door of Jumbo hut at 6,15pm. eeeved
Overnight and morning sleet ruled-.out East Holdsworth leaving us’ dropping down to Atiwhakatu, over Pinnacle Ridge and sidling a new track'to Mitre Flats.
