Whanganui Bay: Anzac Rockclimbing Show

23–25 April 1983 · Whanganui Bay, Lake Taupo

The 3 day fiasco included a cast of 14'new and used’ rock climbers. The only late scratching was fine weather for Saturday. Dave Gilroy saved the Gay by cleaning up his act on'Litany of Lunges’ (21), followed by Paul Greenwood who also followed Wilf Dickerson's fine lead on ‘Botanic Man' (20). Fighting off the morning mist Dave Wills lead ‘Jail Bait' (17) after leading Craig Ritchie up 'Marble Marvel' (15). Sunday started fine and saw a burst of activity, with Wilf taking a big swing on 'Entertainment' (20) and 'Last Chance’ (22). As an encore Martin Hunter took a 'Grounder' on '‘Jugband Blues' (1S), when the rock broke. He did, however, succeed on 'Choss Corner' (19). Grant Hillyer put on a fine Gisplay to follow him. Martin went on to follow Paul G. on ‘Entertainment’. In the meantime Dave W. ‘started off with 'A Bridge Too Far' (21) before aiming at the high digits by topping ‘Been Down So Long' (23), and Dave N. was followed by Greg Aimer on ‘James Stirling Direct' (17). Greg went on to climb on Sunshine. Buttress under Claire's excellent guidance Dave #. followed the crowd with a lazy ascent of ‘Botanic Man', : : A peaceful Sunday Eve was lost to the noise of zealous Boaties and an overeager 'D6'. Monday's main attraction was Dave N.'s performance on ‘Moveable Feast' (23). Blood-thirsty fans had cameras at the ready as Dave's top runner fell out below the crux: ‘Wilf followed and then lead 'Seritti Politti' (22), Dave No. took a dive leading ‘Grave Robber’ (22) ., and Dave W. lead choss ‘Corner’. : Qther climbs for the weekend included: Helen (16), Furry Animals (16), games Stirling (15), Orange “ip (15), Piece of Cake (13), Candle in the “ing (11), This Climb is a Lemon (13), Lens Dancing Dog (13). The above routes, and more, were done by Phil Squire, Craig Pitchie, Matt Comeskey, Nicholas Wilson, Wayne Kells, and Grant Hillyer (who also led ‘Gemini Right' (17).) The Maori Land Owners: are having a large scale clean-up project, include ing levelling scrub (prior to gras3sing) with a D6 bulldozer. Climbers. in the meantime must camp in the Gorge/Plateau camping areas and use the beach only, for access. : : ms vet
