Egmont? Lake Dive... an offer not to be missed..... I guess that's how I ended up joining Barbara and her faithful band of trampers last weekend, . , As we left a perfect Wellington everything was crossed for a good weekend,."up country”. Arriving at Dawson Fells in the early hours of — I. 4,, Saturday we were deposited in the chilly car~park where we wasted no time in-locating the public shelter. Before long the only sounds that could be heard were contented snores way above the saund of the wind! Saturday arrived and with it grey clouds. Undaunted we set out our” destination Lake Dive. A well defined track made the going easy and i was gullible enough to believe we were actuslly’ tramping. through the: foot-° hilis of the great Mount Egmont!! Yes I was assured the summit was up there somewhere - well, behind. that bit of Kiwi mist! Soon we hit the snowline and walking sticks becane ice axes as we reached Kapunui Lodge. This we found bursting at the seams with AICGters, however the sight of us soon sent them scurrying for ice axes and crampons and a quick exit was made by ali, But not before Claire did her domesticated bit ensuring Greg was well fed!! Well rested we were off but progress slow - why does the wind always blow in the wrong direction!{ Eventually we realised we were beaten and a ‘hasty retreat was made, Our first aid was tested on return and soon a painful arm was immobalized in a very sporting sling. Down and home - Konini Lodge... A taxi whisked Anne off to Stratford, Barbara making a good attempt to make it doubly worthwhile - a spectactular fall Barbara! After running amok in the hospital Anne was released plus one white plaster! -to match John’s. Sunday and blue sky between the clouds, and there she was - Mt Egmont (so they were telling the truth!) Not wanting to waste time we wandered off, ambling up the ridge walk to the plateau. Then down the enchanted walk... "enchanting" to the bubbling springs and Wilkies pools for lunch. From here we were able to watch fellow Tongue~a-lMeats descend from the ‘I mountain in front of us. Then it was time for home. Thanks Barbara for a lovely weekend, Captain: Barbara - Crew: Claire, Murray, Neil, Jayne, Anne, Glen, John, Mareus and Marion (scribe), .
