After five people joined our party of 12 we set out from the Chateau in brilliant sunshine. We were to stroll around to Mangatepopo for lunch, where we lost three more of the party. The weather was clagging in so it was time to get a move on to the saddle. At the top we were escorted across the South Crater by a lone seagull! A few mutterings were heard.... what a rip off: we paid $25 for this and where's the crater? After some searching for the front part of the party we finally reunited and arrived at Oturere Hut wet and bedraggled. There we dined on Bruce's soup and lasagne and listened to Saara's pearls of wisdom on tramping.
Sunday morning involved a relaxed sleep-in while we listened to the rain. Then we [illegible] off to Waihohonu Hut 3 hours away. In the afternoon we were kept entertained by Chris sleeping like a baby and snoring like a pig!
We started much earlier on Monday, at 5.30am thanks to one of our younger members, yelling 'Good morning flowers' to us all. Ahead of us was a pleasantly wet wander along a valley to Tama Lakes, down to Taranaki Falls then along to the Chateau and the bus.
Those on the trip were: Adrian, Joan, Bruce, Raewyn (scribe), Anthony, Saara, Iain, Veronica, Craig, Roslyn, Kevin and Chris the Trip Leader.
