There's something special about the wide open spaces, especially in winter when it's raining and rivers are up and it's freezing; There's something exciting about pitching a wet tent next to a rising creek in the middle of the night; There's a certain risk involved in brushing your teeth down-stream from a dead sheep I get a real buzz when I put on my wet ‘bover' boots, and kick my way up to the tops, somewhere up there in, the mist... Nothing ventured Nothing won: On Queen's Birthday Weekend, a group of dare devils led by Murray Worsop headed for the Ruahines in search of that ‘certain something'! After a breathtaking bus trip we arrived at Mokai Patea Station and faced with indecision, found ourselves a swollen stream to pitch our tents by. _(Smirk..from €.G.*). °G.C.'s amazing tunnel tent was noted with envy, as we resigned. ourselves to our Club issue port— able paddling pools. Fie : On Saturday,. after the usual sweaty, plod, the team arrived on the tops (Did we have to come all this way just to do a Fepeat of Judd-Ridge - oh glorious farmland!). Inclement weather forced a change of plan. we headed down to safety only to be confronted with a 'Bushcraft III - type' river crossing. After being escorted across by a couple of Real Men, we reached Otukota Hut only to fin@;the Fits warmly ensonced, unscathed, and unscratched. Because of the weather, our leader was faced with a tough decision:-— he made the right choice and ordered a rest day on’ Sunday. ‘ Comé Sunday morning there was a rush for the spare bunks vacated by the foolhardy Fits. By mid-afternoon after downing Moros, scroggin'; lunches, etc. (in order to get rid of the weight), we found wood collecting a-serious prospect - two young bucks appeared, to put us to shame! That evening after a scrumptious meal of vesta chicken curry & rice, it blew a right storm inside the hut. We've decided to put a recommendation to the Ministry of Energy that they investigate the gas producing potential of this product.

a Monday, after a grovel in the dark, we packed our gear and set off by 7.30am - an early start for such a laid-back party. oee/2
