  • Mathew Comesky The road rattled and shock the bus through the desert, and up into the denuded hilis where farwers coaxed a littie withered life out of the soil... At 16,000 ft. the road tcpped-out onto the flat altiplane, a vast undulating plain of tussock. The deep greens and intwining shadcws, were so refreshing in comparison to the desert of. the Lowlands. On the horizon cf the altiplane rose the Corderillia Bianca, a range of mountains stretching in one long, snowcappec rank of Andean giants. Tt was all like a wave of fresh air. , After settling in Huaraz, filling curselves with beer and peanut slabs, we rezily felt that we ought to be doing something towards climbing a few peaks. An acclimatization tric over the Quebrada Honda = Ultra, was chosen to walk - cff the layers of fat, accumulating where hard steel springs of muscle'had once been. David, Tan} and I, left Husraz and accidentally caught a truck (while waiting for a bus) .to Thancos, 49 km north of. Huaraz. Moving up the Honda we passed through numerous small villages and were greeted by the canpesinos (farmers), who wished us luck, and the blessings of every saint imaginable. The road passed through 2 granite canyon ang soon we were seeing less terraced fields, and more cattle and shepherds. We campec at 12,000 ft. feeling sunburnt and short of breath, but happy.
