Soon after starting from the Rainbow Reach Carpark; "eeee@ Short diversion cut to the Lake Manapouri shoreline at Shallow Bay was well worth while-as it was a superb morning and the sight of the still waters of the lake with such a magnificent backdrop of mountains was unforgetable, There is a mounted pointer diagram naming the peaks in sight. Then it was on to the latest in tramping huts, 1988 style, the 40-bunk 2-level Moturau Hut with internal circular stairway, internal flush loos, gas fired drying room, gas lighting and cooking etc." ’ ; There is an alpine section to the track with wide panoramic views; "Shortly after emerging above the bushline there is a fine viewpoint, locking down the Iris burn and over the surrcunding mountain country. Here the formed track stopped and we follewed the ridge (marked by steel standards) to the first of the alpine shelters at 1390 metres". There are several well constructed shelters but apparantly this section of the track will demand respect even when fully formed. Light snow fell as Sue and Lindsay crossed Mt. Luxmore (1471 metres). , Mt. Luxmcre Hut is above the bushline at 1085 metres and has similar Similar afcilities to the others. There are caves nearby with some beautiful formations to see. The track down is muddy in places and still is to be upgraded, esnecially the section between the hut and spectacular limestone bluffs. At the bottom is a section around the shoreline of Lake Te Anau. oar: ree tee
