ASCENT MitRE CcJUNEF 324-265 MURRAY WORSOP
This trip was a good example of tramping for pleasure, beginning Priday night. Out of the vans we piled, and before our trip leader could rally the troops for a forced March to the river flats, the rebellious members of the party had found a nice sheltered holiow alongside the vans. The flies were pitched before Marshall could change our minds,
The heavy rain during the night was frozen solid on the flies by morning. A brilliant day beckoned us onwards and upwards. The majority raced on for an early lunch at the new Mitre Flats hut but only four attempted the ascent of Mitre, much to Marshall's dismay. Meanwhile several couples turned this medium trip into a leisurely stroll, soaking up the sunshine and the beauty of the surroundings; including native orchids and some magnificent rimus. However, the sidle track did become a little tiresome after awhile.
The weather deteriorated in the afternoon and the four adventurous members ‘Marshall, Mark, William and Bill) turned back on reaching Peggy's Peak. It was also getting rather late. However the views were apparently magnificent which made it all worthwhile.
While the majority lounged in the relative luxury of the new hut (an excellent pot belly stove kept us warm), a new member to club was proving not only that there are trout in the rivers of the Tararuas but also that they can be caught. Bunks take note! One was caught in the evening, annther the next morning. Ve dined on one for breakfast. Superb! !
The stroll aut on Sunday was again very leisurely for some, but this time it was wet and windy. We waited only a short while for the FE trip - everyone was early.
Thank you Marshall for your leadership. We all enjoyed the trip even if we didn't accomplish the ascent of Mitre. And the beef stroganoff was superb.
