Leaving for Mitre Flats was a very wet beginning and the weather stayed that way until Sunday when the sun appeared at long last. We arrived late Friday evening at Blind Creek in the Tararuas. The FE trip of Eric, Rowan and Woger left the main group for Mitre Flats that same evening. The members of the easy tramp stayed at Blind Creek, disbanding for the night. Karen, Tony and Debbie stayed in the luxury of the mini-bus and myself, Mark (skin head? and Marianne took a less inviting campsite under the fly amongst the sheep droppings nearby. The rain never left us and the fly didn't help much either. But for the hardy the night out was a kind of pleasure despite the wat. The following morning we packed up and headed into the interior wading through swollen rivers which had once been small streams. The track was still good and well marked and we arrived at Mitre Flats Hut around midday. The hut was a pleasant surprise and a well received brew was enjoyed by all. The medium party returned that afternoon having spent the day going higher and finding snow. It was time to dry off and unload the sodden packs and contents, The humour soon developed and we were all entertained by bursts of hilarity from the crazier amongst us. Even the short hair sported by Mark did not escape comment. (What style is it?)
A hearty stew and and excellent lasagne were cooked up. Smokers were ridiculed immensely. I really enjoyed it! Lines of impromptu quotes and verses were briiliantly performed by Woger and enjoyed by ali, I think. Bocks were read by others and maps pursued with wisdom. . Of course we had a five hundred game fanatic and the card sharks had a memorable time figuring out the pictorial scenes displayed on the cards. The following day was a beauty and we left the hut at around 2pm and walked out. The rivers were lese swollen but the blisters more. There were many broken trees along the track and hill slides were everywhere. Arrived back in Wellington at 7pm wet and worn out. It was a very successful tramp with a great group of eager people.
