Makara – Black Gully – Red Rocks

February 1989

Text taken from the club newsletter.

Saturday morning saw torrential rain with high winds. Not the most popular conditions for tramping. But they're a hardy bunch and some had even been tramping with Murray before. Everyone turned up, even the truck (much to some people's disappointment) so they set off for Makara Beach.

On the way we were told horror stories of rock climbing around cliffs with crashing waves below, by our most experienced guide, Harry. The stories were dismissed by most as fairy tales ... little did we know.

The weather improved all the time and so did our spirits. Extra adrenalin was needed for the cliff detours, especially by those scared of heights. Having a pack made it harder to clamber around. But there were no casualties or homesick people.

The barreness of the place, with the ocean as far as you could see on one side, and the cliffs and isolated bays, makes it a different and enjoyable place.

We spent lunch lazing around, with Peter occassionally displaying energy. Murray left us at this stage (triathalon tomorrow) and instructed Kate on the finer points of leadership. Early morning cups of tea served to others, etc. (More training is required in these areas).

From here we were soon heading inland in search of a campsite. Three were suggested. By the time we reached the first campsite the decision seemed already made. Most people were resting. We all worked together and in no time tea was ready and all the tents and flies were up. The dinner was enjoyable, so much so that some people had seconds. Dick and Dervile provided entertainment around the campfire, and after some discussions it was getting dark and so was time for bed.

Most people enjoyed a good sleep, one however saw a lot of murders and another froze. This particular person, who I'll try not to mention by name had a tough weekend. Pauline's dad lent her his pack and sleeping bag. But people today can't be as tough as they used to be. However even with blisters, aching back, lack of sleep, she stilled enjoyed it. A real tramper.

The next day was very clear and hot. (Was there any coincidence between the fine weather and Murray the Rain God being at the triathalon? - Ed) Melanoma is still a popular word. Slip, slap, slop. We made fast progress, and were able to have a relaxing lunch, and time at the finish. It was a weekend enjoyed by all.

Those on the trip: Murray (wet weather leader), Kate, Michelle, Debbie, Harry, Dick, Dervile, Mike, JoJo, Peter, Pauline, Gary, and possibly one or two others.
