The truck arrived at Ketetahi roadend in the early hours of the moming, in the rain, and soon resembled a refugee camp, or an evening in the trenches. Trampers dropped where they sat. The morning early, still raining, the Mediums blasted off for Ketetahi Hut. The weather discouraged any further travel and the Mediums, joined by the Easies (noisy and unruly) remained at Ketetahi, The Mediums, straining at the leash, filled the day by reading, watching the FEs crawl away in torrential rain, taking in the waters at the hot springs, playing Peter's video game, and trying to avoid the Easies ‘around the hut’ excesses. Saturday evening the wind changed to the South and the rain stopped and the snow fell. Sunday moming the Mediums were off over the saddle to Blue Lake, where in the shelter of the ridge they played in the snow and took photographs. Some cartographer named the Blue Lake ‘Blue’, so it must be assumed he was a cynic, was blind, or occasionally it is blue. However that day it was a cold icy green with ice forming on the side. The team dropped into Central Crater where the boys snapped more photos and skated on a targe sheet of ice. Then across to Lower Emerald Lake for more photos. Since no-one was brave enough to test the ice we skimmed rocks across it.
Then in horrific conditions the tearn crawled across the frozen wastes to Oturere Hut. There was no loss of fe, however great deeds were done, history will remember their names. The team had lunch at Oturere, then left through more hospitable conditions for Waihohonu Hut for the evening. Three younger and hardier members of the party camped out. Monday was beautiful, clear and warm. The team was away at a reasonable hour, but lost quite a bit of time searching for the old Waihohonu Hut, which being large and red, and alongside the track, proved hard to find. Lunch at Lower Tarna Lake, then a plod over the ridge between Upper and Lower Tama for a look down into Upper Tama Lake, then onto Taranaki Fas and out to Whakapapa Village. Those on the team: Peter Jackson, Ken Aickin, Willlarn Cone, Andrew Maugham, Delmar Schafer, George Williarns, Joshua O'Neill, Nick Sawicki, Kevin Godwin, Rob Henry.
