11 - 13 SEPTEMBER 1992 by Jo McKenzie This epic begins on Wednesday night when my meagre party of six suddenly expanded to 15 at the blink of a few eye lids. But the bookies were out favouring the odds that this expansion would soon diminish by 3 bods. And so it was that 12 of us headed away in the truck on a rather clear Friday night. With no decent campsites at the roadend (and the Easy's already booking the back of the truck), I informed the troops it was time to move on to bigger and better things. The moon was in full force and the sky was clear, which made for easy travel along the 4-wheel drive track It was very tempting to just keep on waiking into Mitre Flats Hut, 2 - 3 hours down the track. Alas, I decided we had best not show up the Fit's, who had already raced ahead to the hut. We awoke to a crisp, clear morning, and after the usual morning activities were completed, it was time to progress onwards. A fairly uneventful trip into the Mitre Flats Hut, we had a late morning break soaking up the sun rays. Then it's up to the bushtine for lunch, not without a few snowball fights on the way of course. “Munch Break" was taken at the bushline, with good views as well. And so the exciting story waits on a computer at work for the next couple of months, until the author is about to disappear overseas and decides she had better finish it and also mention what a neat time she has had with the Club over the last two years. This would also apply to "he of the expensive sleeping bag liner and ‘o dreaded one”, or will the dreads still be tagging along when we leave the country??? Anyway, I would just like to ay on behalf of Andrew and myself........ that we have really enjoyed being involved with the Club, So....... have fun...... keep on tramping, mountainbiking, climbing, etc.....we'll miss having all you crazy people around while we're away.....but never fear, we will return.....some day.....we will leave some contact addresses with the Club just in case you want to write!! Adios Amigos!! And so we climbed as far as was feasible with only ice axes and no crampons, had amazing views right down to Wellington and out to both coasts. Then we toddled back down to the hut to dine on heaps of cheese & crackers for starters, then more yummy food (can't quite remember exactly what it was.....but it must have been good!!) There must have been dessert too.....or else Mike would never have forgiven mel!! (or maybe we were too bloated and had dessert the next day?!?) Sunday was a cruzie day - do what you like as we had plenty of time to spare to walk back to the roadend. So a couple of the keener lads went in search of the Fits up the hill. Some of us wandered part way up the track and found a nice sunny stream to sit beside, while others enjoyed the sun from the deck of the hut. A very enjoyable trip, good company, nice food and great weather! Cheers, Jo
