MITRE, TARARUAS 6-8 AUGUST 1993 By Andrew McColgan ) As we headed off into the night it was exceptionally dark because most of the torches were either faulty or on the blink. The track was not as I rememberedit........ funny how walking in the dark puts a whole new perspective on tramping! Blisters and a small fall put paid to three of the group's plans to reach Mitre Flats Hut that night and they decided that they had had enough of tramping and elected to pitcha fly right in the middle of the track. Meanwhile, the rest of the party continued on to Mitre Flats, arriving in time to stack a few zzz's before the first rays of dawn appeared. We waited around for some time for our leader who had promised he would be at the hut by nine thirty in the morning, but when 11 o'clock came and went and there was still no sign of him, our feet started getting itchy and off we headed to conquer the mighty "Mitre". This was successfully achieved even though at one stage the scribe almost wimped out and in spite of the best attempts by a young person by the name of Julian to gas us out all the way up and then down the mountain. Back at the hut we were greeted by a small-scale invasion of Johnsonville Youth Group trampers, 17 in all, which made for a very cosy night in the hut. Those with a bit of sense, retired outside to make use of the veranda and the fly while the rest of us endured a night of noise, rustling sleeping bags, maans.and groans,-someone-talking.in their sleep making some very odd comments - mostly nonsensical - and a very large buzzing blow fly which managed to keep most of the occupants of the hut awake. But on the whole, a good time was had by all. And no, I haven't forgotten, sorry Claire and Gary for waking you up when we arrived at the hut!!! No need to mention the punters on this trip as they all know "oooooh" they arell! Scribe: Woody
