trip lengthened by about an hour and our tempers shortened by a considerable margin, we reached Totara Flats. After a meal of Bolognese, (which is spaghetti bolognese when the person’ with the spaghetti shows up); we had a great dessert-eating competition. Steve had been in charge of providing the dessert and was obviously overqualified for the job as there was enough to feed six. Vaughan was full, so Steve and I attempted to consume it all by ourselves, much to the amazement of a party from the Tararua Tramping Club. Steve was declared the winner by a knockout when I was unable to completely finish my Blueberry Danish Pie and whipped cream. Too full to move, we spent the night in the hut. On Sunday we ignored the markers and followed the river past the slip. This took less than ten minutes. We were cheered tremendously by this and the day went well, marred only when Vaughan managed to slip off a rock and fall into one of the creeks. Our fears for his health were put to rest when he began loudly informing the entire area of the water temperature and its effect on various portions of his anatomy. No one who can use language like that could be too badly hurt! A couple of hours in the sun to dry out before the Duchess arrived and he was as good as new.
