, “THE SMALL EASY , CTRIP IN THE KAIMANAWAS 26 - 28 NOVEMBER 1993) Q: Why did the frenzied backpack-toting figure run over Paremata Bridge? A: "Cos he was the scribe for the Easy trip up the Urchin Track in the Kaimanawas; ‘Twas his third trip with the Tongue & Meats; He'd forgotten what the traffic was like at that point in space-time; He'd forgotten the. Duchess would've been caught up in the traffic. (1 point for each point you got; 2 pts - average, 3 pts - good, 4 pts - very good, 0 pts - nice try turkey!) Q: Howdo Tongue & Meats pass the time onthe way up?

Q: _ Is this whole accursed report gonna be like this? A: No. Y'see, everybody save us Eas(ys/ies)**. were "dropped off part way along the sealed road:bit’’ We: (Chris the leader, Darren, and Rob the frenzied etc) got driven up to the Urchin Track roadend and d spent the night in the truck. ; ; The next day. They tagged along for the rest of the : day.

I find the bushline amazing. One minute you're strolling amid trees and bush in a palette of green and grey, then one step and POP! Just rock, with a few alpines for gamish. And on this one, a battered-looking trig point. Ard on this day, great views of Mounts. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, Tongariro, and Lake Taupo. (Or sol am told; I am busy taking photos).

After that trudge up, the trot along the tops was refresh- ing. The track down was ominous. Two fordings later and we find a campsite; a piece of river-flat with moss, tussock, and enough rocks around _ the place to pitch the fly and make a start on our chicken and cheesecake dinner. (Don't you wish you went slumming with us lowlife Eas(ys/ies) more often?) Then, of course, it rained. We went straight into hibernation until it left.

I swear, chicken with carrots, onions, pasta, and mushrooms, cheesecake with peaches and whipped cream, anda hot drink neversounded so good - except perhaps to a Roman. Chris considered going up Thunderbolt. More rain set in. "Chris decided not to go up Thunderbolt. Sunset. Zzzzz. ‘Next’ day: A rerun of yesterday, but in the opposite ~ direction, with all the Mediums tagging along. The ominous down bit took only an hour in the other ~. ‘direction? I must be fitter than I thought. Back along the ridge, past a clump of Mediums on a peak (group shot, was it?) and down to the bushline for lunch and rain.

~ Back to the roadend and the Duchess at last! This means that I can tum green! (I was wearing red all through the trip, y'see, and my backup clothes were green, and not as smelly as the red artefacts). THE END

(This trip report was brought to you with the aid of Chris, Darren, and Rob Cruickshank, scribe and member-inwaiting and a Latin dictionary. Now, about those asterisks . .

of The Jargon File or The New Hacker's Dictionary. _* Frankly, I can't make up my mind about this plural. "Easys" makes a noun out of "easy" but 'Easies" looks more aesthetically pleasing. Whatthehell - just strike out the ending you don't like). I
