Dave Catchpole For those members who didn’t go on the Easter Club trips to the South Island or Mt Ruapehu, you missed a great weekend. The weekend get-together at Ruapehu was a great success with good company, good food and great trips. We had anything between 24 and 30 people staying at the Club Lodge, while another 16 from the “Auckland section” of the Club stayed at Pokaka, and a further 6 to 8 stayed at Turandi. Friday saw most of the troops going up to the crater for a look at the damage from the 4995-96 eruptions of Ruapehu. The weather was fine with the odd bit of mist and cloud around — just enough to keep from being cooked in the sun. On the Saturday we had most people doing a Tongariro crossing, along with about 500 other walkers. Some of our party tried to go up Mt Ngauruhoe, but it was a bit dangerous with the crowds of people already on the mountain, so they did a variation of the popular crossing instead. Others went rafting and some did easy walks around the mountain. Saturday evening we had a special dinner and guests came up for the evening from Turangi and Pokaka, A few slides of old members and huts around the hills added to a very enjoyable and convivial evening. Sunday was declared a rest day by the majority and some easy tramps around Lake Rotopounamu and along the Tongariro River were done. Some of the keener types had another go at climbing Mt Ngauruhoe, getting ahead of the mobs this time. The weather was unbelievably fine and sunny for the whole weekend which went a long way to making a very successful weekend for everyone who came up to join us.
