17 - 19 October 1997 Sarah Goodhue
Friday 17th October We left for Otaki at around 6.45 pm. It was about a two-hour drive to our destination. When we got there we had a short walk into Parawai Hut, and we slept here among the rats for a night. It rained in the night but in the morning the sunlight broke through. Saturday 18th October We had a busy day planned, so as soon as breakfast was over we started learning everyone’s names. We were soon packed up and on our way to a secret bay, where we set up our tent for the weekend. We went for a walk to do some navigation. The day was over already. As soon as I hit my bed, I was asleep. Sunday 19th October The weather was staying fine. Awesome! We started on river crossing today. The water was like ice — it froze our legs. After lunch we packed up and tried to find our way around the Arcus walk loop track, and here we ended the weekend with some cold, wet river crossings.
