I ooking back at Waitangi Week-end, there are four words which are embedded in our memory. We will not forget the words “Get Up — Stand Up” which Rob Hosking so eloquently sang at 6.00 am on the Sunday morning. Who needs an alarm clock or radio when you have Rob in the group! Friday was the best in terms of personal accomplishment. Starting at 9.00 am we began the hill climb which got steeper and steeper and continued until we finally reached Granity Pass Hut at 5.00 pm. Praise must go to Belinda Henderson, who being the most experienced tramper, had the privilege of carrying our wet tent fly. The climb had been long and laborious but we

were rewarded by stunning views, beautiful greenery, and the fact that we slept at an altitude of 1200m. Saturday’s challenge was to explore the open granite/limestone basins of Mount Owen and ultimately ascend to the top. I am happy to report that all group members reached an altitude of 1800 metres — a great accomplishment particularly for those of us, most notably Sharon Partington and me, who do not enjoy heights.
