Angle Knob revealed its splendid panorama over the Tararuas, and indeed stretched as far as the South Island. The not-very-difficult-butlong-ascent split the not-very-closelyknit-groups into several not-veryclosely-knit-groups. Nick the rescuer, seeing an aeroplane wreckage indicated on the map, dashed off in an effort to search for survivors. He later recounted that there was no sign of life at the wreckage. The wouldbe survivors had probably strolled off for a few seconds in an effort to relieve the 50 years of boredom waiting to be rescued. From Angle Knob the route descends towards Jumbo Hut, located at a height of 1400 metres. As the crew assembled for evening lunch, a superb sunset appeared as the final crowning glory of another superb tramp. Tales of the ascent were recounted around the camp’s gas fire.
