Watching white wrinkly feet turn pink and healthy again after a whole day in wet boots; ¢e Finding a grassy spot to camp after two days of grey riverbed. Marilyn Duffy * The discovery of a sleeping bag liner has transformed the experience of sleeping under a fly from great to luxurious (well, almost). <= —— — a oo “ I never thought grass could look so great — each patch is getting the eye over for its potential as a campsite Mary Morgan Walking up the gorge on Saturday seemed like a hard slog especially as we didn’t find a campsite until 5.30pm... but it suddenly took on a whole new appeal on Day 2 when it was a choice of walking back down the gorge or scaling the mountain with shear drops at the top in problem winds. Shawn Phillips

The weather has been kind, to say the least, over the past few days and this, teamed with great food and good company has compensated (somewhat) for that terrible scree that slowed us down and thus altered our trip — I WANT MY BATH! Elizabeth Harrington “e I got very attached to my hat, to grass, to sitting down, and to eating at every possible opportunity. The stones were a little tedious after 2 days but the company was great and the sun shone on all our endeavours! Kate Morgan

Trip Reports

We left on a Friday night to discover the green and lush South Island! But they hadn’t taught me at the bushcraft course how to walk on rocks for 24 days! It was a challenge. We made it and it will stay long in our legs... and our memories! Good weekend, good company!

Christiane Moreau

Great company —-a-mine-of information-on-vegetarian-cooking- ---— -——__ — — _.. — —— ~~ -.— Preparing cheesecake I didn’t get to taste. And who said sellotape was not an essential tramping item. They scoff no longer! A great tramp although the knees and ankles may never be the same again! Moira Gallagher

Hot sun, sunburnt legs, endless rocks and boulders, wet feet and blisters, but great campsites, food and fires at the end of the day.

Christine M.

Really nice food, morning tea, lunch and dinner. In between, hot sun and clear sky, very tired feet, lively and funny conversation. Had a great first “real” tramp.

James M.

And Some Walked Upon Stony Ground Oh the grand old leader McDermott She had 11 women,3 men, each with a backpack She walked them up the Miller Stream and then she took them straight back down! And when there were stones, there were stones And when there were stones, there were stones And when they were only half way up There were still more bloody stones!

A trip to be remembered for the mossy springy sleeping platform and the reel of sellotape. And... has anyone mentioned the stones? Lisa “there’s a hole in my shoes dear”
