Nestled in the back of Wellington lies a large piece of private land, a friendly land owner and a great opportunity to explore on two wheels. It's 9am Sunday morning and three WTMC. members set forth up the Wrights Hill Skyline track. Harry arrives on another bike, surely the sign of an aspiring gear freak, but muttering he isn't a mountain biker. This route will change his attitude I think. The sun is coming out and the sky is clear. The twisting turns of the skyline track keep us focused, the gradient is gradual and Wrights Hill is a long way up, but the top only brings an extra urge of enthusiasm from Garry ..... some fast downhill sections lie ahead!
Beyond the Karori Sanctuary lies our main aim - Long Gully. Through the gate and onto private land, but the track is more than a track — an easy gravel road leads us onto the airstrip and out to the south coast. Goats roam this land on which native bush slowly regenerates. Views span Cook Strait, to the Marlborough Sounds, but directly ahead lay the snow capped Kaikoura Mountains. It was hard to imagine we were just over the hill from Wellington's CBD, but the wild south coast lays unfolded beneath us. The sun shone and the nor wester blew as we ate lunch. Harry even pondered the idea of owning a cell phone ...... geez, next thing he'll have a digital camera! Out via Red Rocks we headed home.
I'm not sure Harry claims to be a gear freak. In fact, I'm not sure if Harry considers himself a mountain biker yet, but it's a damn good place to start! -- Grant INCL L108 [POOLS sn enaeyweenen, snes 20 Featuring: Amie, Anna, Annemarie, Andrew M, Andrew T, Gail, Helen (trip ‘facilitator’), Mike, Renee
