by Andrew Trembath After arranging the transport needs for the club trips to Lewis pass area it was my turn to plan what to do at Easter. I thought why not to head to the club lodge for a break and some day walks. And hopefully some nice weather to be had. (The last few Easter the weather has not been the best up there).
Well the weather was great all weekend and I got some nice walks done. On Good Friday I headed up the chairlift (it saves time) and then headed up to the Skyline ridge in above the Te Hue Hue valley. You get great views from there of Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Tongariro, Mt Eggmount. Tama lakes to name a few sights you can see. After a few photos I headed up towards Te Hue Hue peak to get better views. After heading back down to the knoll ridge café for a coffee it was off again heading over to the National Downhill to head back to the lodge for a late lunch, and sitting on the deck reading and having an beer or two. There are many more great walks to be done up there around the lodge area, there are the walk to the crater, exploring around the lodges, heading over to meads wall and walking along the ridge above happy valley. Or you can do the loop trip around the Whakapaiti Valley; Tama lakes just to name a few of them. And the best thing at the end of the day you are back in the lodge having a nice cooked dinner having a beer, wine and relaxing after a nice hot shower. (You can't do that on a normal tramping trip)
So remember the club has this great asset up there to us over the summer as well as winter. It a great place to go and veg out in even if you stay in the lodge for the whole time you can sit out side in the sun and read your books. It is also kid’s friendly so great for family groups. So if you want to head up there during the summer give the booking office a call.
