Remutaka & Ōrongorongo

Bush valleys and a club hut, close to town.

Remutaka Forest Park lies between the Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa, with the Ōrongorongo Valley and the ridges around Mt Matthews on its southern side. It is close enough to Wellington for day trips and weekends, and many of the club's trips here are gentle ones.

The club's own hut, Pāua Hut, sits in the Ōrongorongo Valley, so it features in a large share of the reports here: family weekends, Guy Fawkes and solstice trips, working bees, and trips that tick off the other huts in the valley. Catchpool, the Whakanui track and the Mt Matthews ridge turn up often as well.

The valley routes follow the river and, after rain, may involve crossing it, so it is worth checking conditions first. Reports here are mostly easy and easy-medium.
