RECENT TRIPS

5 - 7 August: The Ruahine trips got off to a bad start with a 45 minute wait for the FE trip leader who never turned up. Not to worry, the trip ran anyway. Four on the FE trip went along the Parks Peak Range from Makaroro Base and camped for the night on Piopio, An overnight change to a fierce nor'wester forced the party down a good spur to the Makaroro headwaters junction just up from Top Makaroro hut, From there it was only 3 hours out to the Mill. Dave Forbes led his large party (about 12) up to Top Makaroro for Saturday night, then came out along Parks Peak Range, The parties arrived within 5 minutes of each other back to the vehicles, A good weekend,

12-14 August: The second AIC was a great success according to reports with good weather, a full bus load, and a number of good climbs completed.

19-21 August: Besides all the skiiny trips at this time there were some. trips in from Otaki Forks. There were only two on the Winter Southern this year (Brian Charles and Richard Gavey), and they did the Winchcombe instead. Lots of soft wet snow on Hector, but not much anywhere else. Misty and windy on Saturday, fine on Sunday. Tom Haliburton led about five up to Mt. Hector, © The remainderof the busload went to Fields ‘with Bill Barker, 26-28 August: What a useless weekend; I don't know about the . Ruapehu trip but Mitre Flats on Friday night was like a tin ofsweaty sardines with four unattached. 6 TICs and a hoard of Tongue & Meats., and talk about rain - tons of it, I got fed up and want home but Brian Hunt carried the flag and his soldiers - all 12 or 15 of them set out undaunted for a trip. over Baldy to the Atiwhakatu and Angle Knob, The weather was better on Sunday, I'm not sure what happened to the other trips but the easy trip looked confortable under their flies on the farmland,

There haven't been any Mt. Roberts trips as far as I know = no snow, On private trips this month, Richard Gavey climbed Tapaenuku during a short visit and Paul Aubrey did some climbing with Neil Woodrow in Arthurs Pass, Paul was going to stay longer but due to poor weather etc, he decided to come home (and catch the 'flu). a
