Fit trip turned easy (10-12 Dec) night began with a very soggy plod into Mitre Flats hut. The a ee 245 hours. Some settled into the hut and others set up ‘2 flies in.the bush. Rain continued overnight and Saturday morning both the Waingawa river and South Mitre streams were raging torrents. After some consultation it was decided to review the situation after lunch. About llam the rain stopped and the sun broke. through. briefly. River. levels had also ‘dropped... It did not Last however and the rain POOF cont'd...
een CONtK'A 4. returned with a resulting rise in river levels. Lunchtime passed and it was obvious the monscon was here to stay. So were we. In the afternoon with boredom setting in for a few under one of the flies it was decided to make for Holdsworth Lodge via The Pines. tan Hadtieid, Jack McConchie, Sue Charles, Megan Rodden and Barbara Joans n were ready to cross the Waingawa river bridge but only Ian and © Megan made it across. The river was high at that stage surging through the foot i bridge. tan and Jack were on an intended FE which would have @ stop at Mountain House for repairs to the water tap. The other 3 decided to stay at Mitre Flats hut. Throughout the day the sound of bculders crashing down river could be heard. In spite of the weather some groat photoes were taken of the river and waves breaking through the bridge. Tea for some of us was macaroni cheese and there were a few individual meals. Then came a fruity dessert. Some had GIP made with asparagus water - yuki We all had e nicht in the hut with good sleep. Next morning river level had Groppec corsiderably and by 8.30am the last of us left the hut. ; Weather improved on the outward journey with periods of sunshine. At times while crossing farm land we were hailed upon. The trip over to Holdsworth Lodge via Wizenberg hill spread out the group.
