HACKETT—-ROEBUCK-PELORUS (21-24 January) - Dale Parsons This was going to be one of those peacefully blissful trips. I could just see it: there we'd be cruising down the river, only stopping to roll off our tubes when the sun's heat became too unbearable and we had to cool off. Me out in front leading my intrepid followers down the mighty Pelorus, come waterfalls, come: rapids, onward we'll paddle): But back to reality; had to push the trip to death every Thursday night, ended up with a motley bunch of about 20. , I'll mould them into proper tubers I thought, there's nothing here I can't handle, little did I know. I wouldn't say that I'd under~estimated anyone I was just initially amazed.at the length some members were prepared to go to. . Saturday consisted of a trudge from Hackett to the rivers. It was when we hit the lunch spot at 10 o'clock that I realised this trip wasn't going to run to plan. Another lunch spot was found and the sun honoured uS with its presence for the entire hour, so pleasant was it that one of the more elderly members of the crew nodded off only to be awoken by the leader pouring water down his neck. I " I don't think the trip realised how privileged they were in having such a resourceful caring leader. 5 ; Everyone sufficently réjuvénatea we began the long sidle to the river. But a conspiracy was afoot at the river and the beloved leader was unceremoniously. chucked in: (you've heard of: mud in your eye this was water up your nose). A captain usually shoots mutineerg but as Brian's pistal was out of ‘gas I let them off. ° “°° 7 : ie oe Revenge came soonér than expected, it was extremély pleasant to see ong of the geriatrics spit salty tea all over himself much to the amusement © of the entire hut. oe : Sunday was a long day with the troops paddling down the river blue and shivering most of the time, but that's what fun is all about isn't it? Sunday :night. was fairly,-peaceful until the Assistant Chief Guide and a bad imitation of Casanova decided on a new way of chopping wood. A bit of doctoring was required after that. I was all for leaving him there to die but dead bodies lying about, the river are so unscenic. Monday morning and a phantom wind hit one of the flies completely levelling it and.no sooner-had its occupants re-erected-it ,jthan the phantom struck again, this time the poles flew a.good 30m (who said lightening doesn't strike twice?) . ten we sidled for 2 Hours then hit the river till about 2 o'clock when we realised we weren't near the end so the decision was-made to get out and run, we-:arrived just in time to. see tne bus coming over the hill.
