As usual, the Tongue and Meats were planning an energetic “weekend of heroic deeds: from bursting out of bushes =““@long the Barra Track and burning up to Mitre Peak-to blazing a trail to Bannister... . eo DUt ... Lt rained. We're pretty tough, but there’s something about rain that's kinda frightening ...
So, at & soaking railway station on Friday night, two enthusiastic trip leaders were ready to go. But, where were the others? Managing to gather three more bods between them, the Medium and Fit Trips decided to combine forces and head for the hills anyway. Stuart drove us ts the road end and after a short search in the drizzle we found ea comfortable campsite amongst a collecticn of animal “signs". We decided over a brew to take the weekend fairiy easily, and aimed to get up when we woke ur. Besides, the forecast was lousy.
& 10,.00am next day we squeezed on our bocts and made our way up the Barra Track. Mitre Flats Hut eventually loomed ahead at about i.00pm, overshadowed by foggy cloud ... a perfect afternoon for hitting the pit. We spent the day snoozing or gazing at the evening's newcomers through glazed eyss. . ; : A de1icious meal of stroganoft and noodles and back to sleep!
That night our peacs wes disturbed by an assortment of animais which had the cheek to enter the hut and Steal someone’s bikkies: they paid! One of our new hut companions saw to that... 5 tried to get some more sieep amongst shouts cf “damn possum! stupid rat!" (or stronger words to that effect}. We dozed off to a clearing sky, promising curseives that we'd head up Mitre in the morning if the weather was fine.
Well, the weather was fine, but it took us sco long to decide if it would stay fine that we ran out of time. Besides, it was pleasant sitting around in the sun and not having to rush off, Mitre Flats is a lovely spot. After a relaxing walk back to the road end, we piled intc the van and headed back tc Wellington. I thought {'’d better catch up on some more sleep, so can't remember much about the drive back. Must have had too much exercise! Those on the trip: . Kirsty Woods, Daie Parsons, Stuart Lusty, Fiona Neilson, Christopher Young.. tet ; = ee Ee, ee ee “°* KIRSTY WOODS
