OHAU-CARKEEK~} YALTEWAEWAB. = June:2aaet «ts oe = Ghag ord = + Saturday -n night saw 0°c in Wainuiomate, it; ; just. had to be snowing in the Tararuas;: :A ride up to Ohau ‘on Sunday morning with Dale's parents meant we got to the shelter in time for lunch. ‘The afternoon consisted of travelling up the Ohau River and finding our.way on to Te Matawai. Heaps of salty sausage stew: prevailed at dinner time then it was ‘Off to bed. Next morning. after some 'yecchy' porridge we followed. the: “track outside the door to the top of a hill, then along to another one (Arete I think?) and. down to Arete Biv for an early lunch, Overtrou came out as the weather was windy and cold as we wandered toward Tarn Ridge. Since we are all useless navigetors we were unsure of: which way to go on Lancaster, but rushed off one side (Dale thought it was the nicest) and it turned eut to be the ri ight one, as later on.we came tc a hut that said 'Carkeek Ridge Hut' on the door.. What was left of the afternoon was spent thawing out my- feet and arguing amongst,each other to see 3 had the most ailments, “ - It started to rain that evening an@ by the time we got down to Park Forks’ the next morning, the Park River was enormous. After sidling upriver we managed to blunder across somehow and then tripped over @ track markér that‘ had ‘Nichols Hut' inscribed on it. Well the wimps made a beeline for this but it wasn't on Nichols. Fortunately we found this Sane -2+/3
3.. Sign that pointed towards the hut and since it was raining spent the rest of the day pit-bashing there Wednesday morning and the weather was worse as we climbed over Crawford and dropped off Shoulder Knob down to an even bigger Otaki River. After a bréw.at Waitewaewae we sidled round, crossed Arapito Stream which looked more like the Otaki normally does, and climbed up onto the Plateau. Then we travelled down this creek on the other side until we found Leo who’ ‘showedi us where’ the track was. Then he rushed off so that when we got to Parawai there was a brew waiting.
